OUR COMMITMENT TO MARINE CONSERVATION

“As you develop your awareness in nature, you begin to see how we influence all life and how all life influences us. When a man moves away from nature his heart becomes hard”.
Wanbli Nata’u/ Lakota

BUFF has been inspired and humbled by the power and beauty of our native oceans and the gift of our natural elements and resources.

BUFF is committed to protecting and promoting our natural world and has developed a partnership with The Marine Conservation Society to ensure we give something back from every purchase. 2% of all of our profits go directly to MCSUK. We are also passionate about the plastic pollution problem in particular the 5 Gyres - read on to understand why and see what you can do to help.

MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY UK

‘The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is the UK’s leading marine charity. Our work is all about the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. We’ve been the voice for UK  seas for almost 30 years, fighting for better protection for marine wildlife, more sustainable fisheries and clean seas and beaches. Our work has resulted in the creation of marine protected areas around the UK, carrier bag charges to reduce litter and supermarkets being more aware of the need to stock sustainable seafood. But more needs to be done – and our focus is on educating individuals, communities, industry and Government to work towards solutions that will achieve our vision of seas fit for life.

Without the support from organisations such as Buff Natural Body Care, it wouldn’t be possible to achieve the many great things we have to date as well as continuing to fight for cleaner, healthier seas.’

THE FIVE GYRES

The 5 Gyres Institute have led the S.E.A. Change effort to research aquatic plastic pollution and to find solutions for regaining a plastic-free ocean. Their mission is to empower people to become leaders in combating the global health crisis of plastic pollution.

OUR OCEAN IS A NETWORK OF CURRENTS THAT CIRCULATE WATER AROUND THE WORLD- CALLED GYRES.

These five massive, slow rotating whirlpools accumulate plastic, and because petroleum plastics are designed to last, the plastic trash will remain in the ocean for decades or longer.
In the ocean, sunlight and waves cause floating plastics to break into increasingly smaller particles, but they never completely disappear or biodegrade. Plastic particles act as sponges for waterborne contaminants such as pesticides.
A single plastic micro bead can be 1 million times more toxic than the water around it.
Fish, turtles and even whales eat plastic objects, which can sicken or kill them. Ocean animals are also killed by dangerous plastic waste that entangles or traps them, often suffocating them underwater.

SMALL OCEAN ANIMALS, LIKE FISH, INGEST TINY PLASTIC PARTICLES. THESE TOXIC PARTICLES PASS ON TO US WHEN WE EAT SEAFOOD.

Hundreds of ocean species are threatened by plastic pollution, as well as the survival of the ocean itself. Humans depend on the ocean for food and as a healthy ecosystem that maintains the balance of the greenhouse gas CO2. ...
Scientists agree: If the oceans die, we die.

BUFF make sure that the use of plastic is kept to the absolute minimum. Every element of our products is recyclable and even our polypropylene labels are easy peel and can be disposed of in your recycle bin.
