I am preparing for this half term’s camping trip to Cornwall which will involve cooking outside, lots of walking, hours playing in the waves and on the beach …It will inevitably involve the odd cut, graze, blister, a slightly off kilter tummy & various ailments coming to the fore as we relax, as well as going for it in terms of team work and compromise whilst being a little outside of our comfort zone.

All is good as I shall have my little Hero Team of Essential Oils with me – to cover nearly all bases; natural, brilliant for using with children, helpful to our bodies, whilst soothing, balancing and comforting for our minds and emotions.

So what are my 5 Must Have Essential Oils for Camping?

  • Lavender Oil Lavandula angustifolia – my Number 1 go to oil for: campfire scalds – soothing & v. effective in reducing scarring, and great for sunburn, soothing insect bites & encouraging them to heal quickly … brilliant to cleanse cuts, grazes – generally excellent for deterring infection. Alongside, Tea Tree Oil – this the only other I would recommend applying applied neat to skin. A brilliant bonus is that Lavender Oil is deeply relaxing, soothing & analgesic – so can help you & your family get to sleep in your new environment!
  • Citronella Oil Cymbopogon nardus – is a great 100 % natural way of keeping pesky insects out of your tent and from being nipped as you’re snuggled outside the tent, enjoying your beer after a day in the surf…. An absolute must have. I rub a drop on to exposed bits of skin – ankles wrists, backs of hands, around my hairline … or add a drop to after sun lotion after my evening shower.
  • Peppermint Oil Mentha peperita dropped on a tissue and inhaled through the nose – is just brilliant for relieving nausea & travel sickness as well as headaches & sinusitis. It is also great for soothing irritated skin and lovely for tired, hard worked feet, when applied in a carrier – you could add a drop to some body cream or butter you may have with you. In desperation, 1 drop can be added to a mug of hot water & consumed to relieve pain from stomach cramping. Leave an open bottle of Peppermint Oil out near your food supplies to deter ants invading!

  • Chamomile Oil Chamaemelum nobile  – analgesic, stress reliever, great for depression – brilliant for helping to relieve inflammatory reactions such as hay fever & inflammation of the skin or joints. Add a drop to a tissue and inhale through the nose or apply topically to an inflamed area. Again, make sure you add a drop or 2 to a carrier & do not apply neat.

  • Tea Tree Oil Melaleuca alternifolia – is also a great disinfectant and insect repellent. Like Lavender it can be applied neat to cuts, grazes & bites to see off potential infection. If you feel you are coming down with a cold or sore throat – 1 drop in a glass of water – gargled and spat out – an absolute lifesaver if you want to see off a virus developing.
